IELTS Writing Task 2: Band 9 Sample Answer

Question: In many countries, more and more people are choosing to live alone nowadays than in the past. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Sample Answer:

In recent years, there has been a noticeable trend towards people opting to live independently rather than with family or roommates. This essay will argue that this is a largely positive development, owing to the personal growth and enhanced quality of life it facilitates for individuals.

One significant advantage of living alone is the opportunity for personal growth. When individuals live by themselves, they are compelled to take full responsibility for their lives. This includes managing finances, household chores, and daily decision-making. Such responsibilities foster a sense of independence and self-reliance, which are crucial life skills. For example, young adults who move out of their family homes to live alone often report a steep learning curve that ultimately results in greater maturity and self-confidence.

Moreover, living alone can significantly enhance one's quality of life. People who live independently have the freedom to create an environment that perfectly suits their preferences and lifestyle. This can lead to greater happiness and reduced stress levels. For instance, individuals can organize their living spaces in a way that maximizes their comfort and convenience, and they have complete control over their daily schedules without needing to accommodate others' routines. This autonomy can lead to a more relaxed and fulfilling daily life.

However, it is important to acknowledge that living alone is not without its challenges. It can sometimes lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation, particularly for those who thrive on social interaction. Nevertheless, with the advent of modern communication technologies, it is easier than ever to stay connected with friends and family, mitigating the potential downsides of solitude.

In conclusion, while living alone may present certain social challenges, the personal growth and improved quality of life it offers make it a predominantly positive development. As people continue to embrace this lifestyle, they are likely to find themselves better equipped to handle the complexities of modern life.

This response showcases a clear structure, sophisticated vocabulary, and a balanced argument, which are key components of a Band 9 answer in the IELTS Writing Task 2.
